After J.J. McCarthy, things look pretty wide open at the game’s most important position. There’s even some speculation about bringing in another passer from outside of the organization.

Perhaps that ends up taking place, but it’s notable enough that rookie quarterback Max Brosmer has a fan in J.J. McCarthy. The UDFA Vikings QB is, at best, going to be the QB3 in 2025. Seeing him rise any further would only occur if there were some injury issues. Even getting onto the roster, though, would represent a nice accomplishment for the former Golden Gopher.

Vikings QB Max Brosmer & The 53-Man Roster

Last week, McCarthy chatted about Brosmer, offering a strong endorsement of what the recent add brings to the table.

“Yeah, Max is the man,” McCarthy begins. “Just super detail-oriented, works hit butt off, I can’t say enough good things about that guy. He’s just an awesome human being.”

Not too long afterwards, McCarthy even sends some praise over to Brosmer for his ability to sing before concluding: “He’s an awesome dude.”

One wonders how much J.J. McCarthy’s opinion matters — if at all — when it comes to the backend of the Vikings QB competition. After all, so much of the focus for Minnesota’s roster has been about making the sophomore comfortable, so maybe having a backup who has a strong connection with McCarthy has some value.

More important is going to be what Max Brosmer proves capable of doing on the field. He’s currently battling with Sam Howell (the favorite to be the QB2) and Brett Rypien (the favorite to be the QB3) to find a spot on the final roster.

Last season, Brosmer offered his services to the Golden Gophers. He didn’t set the world on fire, but he did offer some promising statistics. He completed 66.5% of his passes — accuracy is a necessary prerequisite to be a Kevin O’Connell quarterback — while picking up 2,828 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

In all likelihood, Max Brosmer’s NFL ceiling is to become a strong QB2, but his story is only beginning. He still has much to prove when it comes to getting to that level, let alone exceeding that possible ceiling.

Earlier in the offseason, there was some chatter about Brosmer settling in well in the Twin Cities due to his willingness to talk a bit of trash. So, too, has there been some discussion about the way in which he mirrors McCarthy.

He signed a three-year UDFA contract to remain in Minnesota, extending his stay in the Land of 10,000 Lakes by jumping from the college team to the NFL team. Over the three years, Brosmer is supposed to command $2.975 million. Crucially, the contract sees $244,000 baked in as guaranteed money, a strong amount for an undrafted player.

Max Brosmer, 24, stands at 6’2″ and weighs 217 pounds. Keep an eye on how #12 performs once the preseason arrives.
