The Vikings pulled off a whopping nine roster moves over the past week.*

Injuries have dictated the terms, creating the need to put players in the infirmary. Doing so clears open room on the active roster and the practice squad, as well. Go ahead and see all that has been done so you’re up to date on all of the movement on the Vikings’ roster.

LB Blake Cashman <—> Injured Reserve

No replacing the top linebacker even if veteran Eric Wilson is an excellent option as the LB3. At this stage, one wonders if Wilson ends up proving too important to take off the field, leading to a scenario where the veteran sticks around as a starter when health allows for Blake Cashman to get back into action.

RB Ty Chandler <—> Injured Reserve

Tough development for the depth runner. Not lacking in speed, Chandler has always had potential. He was working as one of the top kickoff returners and living on the roster as the RB3.

WR Tim Jones <—> Signed Off Practice Squad to Active Roster

The Vikings lost a linebacker and running back. The decision to address the absences involved signing a … wide receiver off of the practice squad. Putting Jones onto the roster is about enhancing the special teams. Note, as well, that Jones has good size and can do a bit of blocking in the Kevin O’Connell offense.

TE Nick Vannett <—> Signed Off Practice Squad to Active Roster

A veteran, Vannett is pretty far down the tight end depth chart. Getting him onto the 53 is about further reinforcing Matt Daniels’ phase while adding more muscle to the offense. Vannett could step in at a moment’s notice and fulfill what O’Connell needs out of a tight end.

CB Tyrek Funderburk <—> Signed to Practice Squad

Youthful upside at a position of need. Unlikely to see the field in 2025, Funderburk will strive to improve his game in search of overcoming the odds by earning playing time.

LB Sione Takitaki <—> Signed to Practice Squad

He’ll be someone to monitor as a player who has played quite a bit in his career. Not going to be surprising to see Brian Flores give Takitaki some added responsibility as the year proceeds. Could Takitaki end up being an undercover contributor?

RB Aaron Jones <—> Injured Reserve

Tough development for the veteran and team captain. Losing him is going to hinder Minnesota’s offense. Yes, he’s older, but Jones is a great leader who can pass block, catch very well, and run the ball. Going to be Jordan Mason getting featured.

RB Cam Akers <—> Signed to Practice Squad

As the prophecy foretold. Credit to Ben Goessling for clarifying that it’s a practice squad assignment for Cam Akers: “A tradition unlike any other: the #Vikings are adding Cam Akers to the practice squad, per source. Third consecutive year they’ve acquired the running back.” In theory, Minnesota could elevate Akers from Week 3 to Week 5 without needing to get the runner onto the roster. The bye follows and then re-inserting Ty Chandler is an option if health allows.

QB Desmond Ridder <—> Signed to Active Roster

Plundering the Bengals makes a pile of sense. After all, Cincinnati is next on the docket for Week 3, so lean on Ridder to offer the inside scoop on what’s in store from Zac Taylor’s operation. Fair is fair, right? The Bengals are operating with a pair of former Vikings passer. One of those quarterbacks — Brett Rypien — is sure to be offering insight about Minnesota’s offense.

* Note that the practice squad elevations on Sunday — bringing up corner Fabian Moreau and edge rusher Gabriel Murphy — aren’t being included.
