Vikings DC Brian Flores Steps Back into the Spotlight

In what has become a yearly tradition, Vikings DC Brian Flores is yet again gaining momentum as a head coach candidate.
Anyone who has been paying attention can see that he has been excellent. The Vikings’ defense has fallen short of sky-high expectations (like the team more broadly, for that matter) but there have been hurdles plenty. Usually, horrendous play from the quarterback makes playing strong defense ultra difficult, but Coach Flores is leading the NFL’s 10th-best defense per points against per game.
Vikings DC Brian Flores & The NFL HC Openings
Much of the intrigue rests in a simple fact: Coach Flores is soon to see his contract end. So, each side could move on in an amicable split that’s easy-peasy from a money perspective.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk approached the issue recently. “Flores, in his third season as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, is in the final year of his contract,” Florio clarifies. “Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Vikings are currently working toward extending his deal.”

The curve ball is that Minnesota’s desire was to extend the DC prior to the current season. Florio offers the word: “The Vikings wanted to do it before the 2025 regular season. Flores decided to wait. If he was betting on himself, he won.”
The PFT writer then lands the plane, clarifying what could soon arrive alongside some of the implications.
First, consider the most recent effort and the impact of getting a new deal in Minnesota: “The stout Week 17 defensive showing allowed the Vikings to become the first team in 47 years to win by 10 or more points while generating fewer than 10 net passing yards. Without a new contract, Flores becomes free to join a new staff elsewhere. With a new contract, he’d remain eligible to leave for a head-coaching job elsewhere.”
Finally, Florio comments on Brian Flores’s lawsuit against the NFL: “Whether and to what extent he’ll be a viable candidate for a second shot as a head coach remains to be seen. His pending arbitration and litigation against the NFL and multiple teams (Giants, Dolphins, Broncos, and Texans) will be a practical impediment — even if federal law mandates that it not be.”

Another factor working against Brian Flores is the Tua Tagovailoa situation. His former quarterback with the Dolphins didn’t have great things to say, complicating future pursuits of a head coach gig. Yes, he’s a defense-first coach, but any head coach needs to arrive at a strong working relationship with the team’s most important player: the quarterback.
Every single interview that arrives for Flores is going to ask about Tua.
Lay all of the complications aside, though. What gets left? The simple fact that Brian Flores is excellent at what he does.
Minnesota’s defense has every reason to be humdrum, lackluster, and/or mid (as the kids say). Instead, they’ve quietly been a really good crew. Recently, Harrison Smith looks rejuvenated out there. Jalen Redmond continues his breakout season, Andrew Van Ginkel is back to being excellent, and Jay Ward appears to be a keeper.
The Vikings DC deserves some credit.

Sometimes, landing a head coach opening is about nailing the timing. A certain situation opens up and the appeal of a defense-first head coach shines through. Does the NFL have one of those jobs open in the 2026 offseason? A team like the Bengals makes a pile of sense.
If so, then Minnesota may need to say goodbye to its brilliant strategist at DC. Coach Flores is 44.
