The Vikings Chaos is Getting Close

Currently, Minnesota’s football fans are beset by a troubling reality: the beginning of July doesn’t offer much in terms of firm news.

But while things appear slow currently — because they are — the Vikings chaos is closer than a lot of people may realize. So, hurry up and slow down as you wait for football to return when training camp, the preseason, and (eventually) the regular season can begin. Things are going to arrive soon.

Vikings Chaos: From July 26th to September 8th

On Monday Night Football in Week 1, the Vikings will be taking on the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The September 8th game feels like it’s a long way off, but it isn’t.

Indeed, the Vikings will get the chance to put themselves at the top of NFC North in Week 1, a game that’s going to arrive in roughly two months. Not that long, folks. The roster addition phase of the offseason is mostly complete — March’s free agent frenzy is no longer running amok on the NFL headlines and the 2025 NFL Draft is behind us — so it’s now about prepping the team for the challenge that’s coming.

On Saturday, July 26th, the Vikings are going to come back to TCO Performance Center to get to work with training camp.

At the top of people’s minds will be the development of J.J. McCarthy, whether the corners are talented enough to tame a pass-happy NFL, and if the veteran FA linemen will be as good as promised. So, too, will people be watching to see how the backfield works out and who will be shining at WR3. Does Donovan Jackson fulfill expectations by becoming the LG1? Does Dallas Turner show evidence of living up to his draft slot as a sophomore?

Surely, there other questions that will occupy people’s collective attention as July moves into August.

Regular fans will get a chance to start answering these questions largely within preseason tilts, the games that can reach an audience that practices simply can’t:

  • Saturday, August 9th, 3:00 p.m. CT: Houston Texans
  • Saturday, August 16th, 12:00 p.m. CT: New England Patriots
  • Friday, August 22nd, 7:00 p.m. CT: at Tennessee Titans

Maybe the most fascinating question from these games will rest in whether J.J. McCarthy plays and how well he plays if he does so. So, too, will everyone will be hoping for good health, a sentiment that’s normal but heightened since McCarthy lost his debut season after a preseason game last year.

On Tuesday, August 26th, the NFL is going to be a chaotic place. Teams across the league need to have their rosters down to just 53 players, a far cry from the 90 who are allowed in the offseason (or 91, depending on whether there’s an international player roster exemption; the Vikings fall into the 91-players camp due to punter Oscar Chapman).

Within these cut downs, keep an eye on who gets retained for the 16-person practice squad.

Another fascinating tidbit to watch rests in who could get scooped up from other teams. Minnesota, quite possibly, could drop down to 51 or 52 players as they eye snagging someone from another offseason roster, most likely to slot into a depth role.

Plus, trades are something to watch. Some teams look to recoup value — usually a late-round selection or pick swap — by offering up a player in a trade rather than just cutting someone. The benefit for the acquiring team rests in jumping to the front of the line, sending over a 6th or a 7th so that the other 31 NFL teams don’t get to make their bid for the player’s services.

So, a ton of news happening in late August. The rosters will get settled and then things will be full steam ahead for the regular season. Minnesota plays on MNF, but the NFL gets going on Thursday, September 4th with the Eagles taking on the Cowboys, a game that’s sure to generate huge ratings.

Vikings chaos is upcoming. Enjoy the quiet season while it’s around but also recognize that things aren’t going to be quiet for too much longer.

J.J. McCarthy, Justin Jefferson, and the rest of the Vikings are looking to improve upon the 14-3 record by not just winning more regular season games but by going far in the postseason.
