There have been some legends in the Minnesota Vikings franchise history, starting with Fran Tarkenton, Bud Grant, and the Purple People Eaters early, continuing all the way to future legend Justin Jefferson throughout the 64 seasons of football in the Twin Cities.

However, Randy Moss still stands alone as he is possibly the most exciting player ever to pick up a football with an unprecedented mix of blazing speed, size, and skill to demolish every secondary that didn’t put all the resources into stopping him.

He was drafted 27 years ago. His son, Montigo Moss, didn’t experience that feeling, but he has a chance to step into his father’s footsteps and join the Vikings. Moss received an invite to Minnesota’s rookie minicamp that will take place next week, and he accepted.

Jordan Schultz reported via social media, “Maine WR Montigo Moss, the son of Hall of Famer Randy Moss, has accepted an invite to the #Vikings’ rookie minicamp. Moss had a terrific senior season, recording 61 catches for 722 yards and 7 TDs on his way to earning All-CAA honors.”

Moss spent his entire college career at Maine, where he slowly improved his yardage total year after year. In year five, he caught 61 passes for 722 yards and 7 touchdowns, all career highs and leading the Black Bears in all three categories. His body composition doesn’t really match that of his old man, but he is a big receiver at 6’1″ and 220 pounds.

Chad Finn, of the Boston Globe, wrote about the younger Moss last fall. He noted: “He’s not as fast as his father, nor as tall (he’s listed at 6 feet 1 inch, whereas Randy Moss is a lanky 6-4). But there are other similarities. He wears No. 81, Randy’s number during his three-plus seasons (2007 through the fourth game of the 2010 season, when he was traded to the Titans) with the Patriots.”

“He has the same confident grin, and the graduate for Fork Union Military School in Virginia sounds quite a bit like his father, minus the West Virginia twang.”

The Vikings have a stacked receiving room, so it won’t be easy to make an impression in camp. At the rookie minicamp, Moss will meet new Vikings wideout Tai Felton, who was picked in the third round to join Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Jalen Nailor in the WR meeting room.

More depth is provided by former second-rounder Rondale Moore once he moves past his nasty knee injury that cost him the 2024 campaign, Tim Jones, a special teamer and depth receiver for the Jaguars in previous years, as well as last year’s practice squad guys, Lucky Jackson, Jeshaun Jones, and Thayer Thomas.

Silas Bolden, Donate Fleming, and Robert Lewis were also signed in this year’s undrafted rookie class and will compete with Moss.

Often, a player or two who show up and perform well at the rookie minicamp are rewarded with the opportunity to continue their journey in offseason workouts and training camp. Just ask a guy called Adam Thielen.

That, however, is a long shot. A more likely scenario is that Moss’ Vikings stint ends next weekend. Still, there’s a chance, and that’s all some players need to make noise.
