Celebrated Vikings Defender and Playmaker Expresses Uncertainty About Future in MIN

Does Camryn Bynum come back for 2025 and beyond? Even the player himself doesn’t know.

The celebrated Vikings defender — one who’s well known for his fantastic celebrations — is getting to the end of his rookie contract. The college corner morphed into an NFL safety, making the transition successfully (a testament to his brains, work ethic, and athleticism). What does the future hold for Bynum?

Vikings Defender Camryn Bynum’s Uncertain Future

For a little while, I’ve been expressing some skepticism about Minnesota’s ability to retain the safety.

Consider an estimate about what the defender could demand for his next contract. A piece from ESPN back in November puts the number in a really high spot: “Five safeties make at least $16 million per year, and Bynum, whose value is rising after three interceptions and eight passes defensed this season, will look to become the sixth. The Vikings believe they are in a good place with him as far as a long-term working relationship.”

If accurate — $16 million per season, on average — then Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will likely look elsewhere for safety help.

Go ahead and consider how Bynum discussed his future.

The safety was asked about not knowing what the offseason holds: “Yeah, it’s emotional, just knowing that I don’t know what’s going to happen. And it’s all in God’s hands. And I trust that I’ll be exactly where I need to be. But really just enjoying these last moments with your teammates as you’re packing up your lockers.”

“I’m just grateful for the time that we had here,” Bynum goes on to note, “and excited to see what happens in the future. I love it here, though, for sure, more than anything.”

Clearly, Bynum enjoys being a Minnesota Viking. Clearly, Bynum knows that nothing is certain as the offseason arrives.

The safety has proven to be very durable, starting all seventeen games over these past three seasons. The 2024 season involved picking up 96 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, 10 passes defended, and 2 fumble recoveries.

PFF puts him at 64th in their ranking, a drop off from 2023 when he came in at 21st. His 742 snaps at free safety are easily leading the charge in terms of where he was aligned, but he did go into the slot for 139 snaps, in the box for 128 snaps, along the d-line for 33 snaps, and at wide corner for 14 snaps.

Camrym Bynum, 26, is coming off of a rookie deal where he made roughly $6.25 million. He very likely will be looking for a good raise on his second NFL contract.

Editor’s Note: Information from Pro Football Reference, PFF, and Over the Cap helped with this piece.
