Report: Vikings QB Goes Through Another “Procedure” on Knee

Yet again, Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy has needed to get some work done on his injured knee.
The report comes courtesy of ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. The word: “NEWS: Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy had a 2nd surgery on his right knee this week to address swelling that developed after an uptick in rehab activity, per source. As part of the procedure, he was given a biologic injection. No changes to recovery timetable.”
Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy Gets More Work Done on Knee
Safe to say that folks are going to be discouraged with this news. After all, we’re talking about the No. 10 pick and someone who is being looked at as the franchise quarterback for the next decade or more.
Kevin O’Connell spoke to reporters about the issue. O’Connell was optimistic: “We noticed a little swelling in there, and just with the time that we do have, he’s been doing everything we asked of him. Improving, getting stronger, all those things. But we just wanted to make sure that there was no cause for concern.” He goes on to explain that McCarthy is “on the original timeline” while pointing toward the passer’s “growth.”

Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune followed up the word from Seifert: “Source confirmed @SeifertESPN’s report that J.J. McCarthy had a biologic injection to deal with intermittent swelling in his knee. No change to his recovery timeline.”
A follow-up thought from Goessling: “To be clear: Source said it was just an injection for McCarthy. No second surgery.”

The clarity about the procedure not being surgery is worth keeping in mind. So, too, does the word about the same timeline offer reason for optimism.
Plenty of Vikings fans will use this as reason to worry. The best information at this stage, however, seems to support a relatively optimistic viewpoint even if it would be better had there been no need to correct the swelling. Cautious optimism that things will work out well.
The coming days may provide further clarity on J.J. McCarthy’s knee.

In the meantime, the Vikings still have a season to play. Sam Darnold will be leading his Vikings into a battle with the Titans on Sunday, November 17th. Winning that game would mean sitting on an excellent 8-2 record.
