Report Suggests the Vikings Have Their Eye on One QB Prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft

One common theme for the 2024 NFL Draft has been the idea that the Minnesota Vikings could trade up to find their QB of the future.

With so much talent at the position this spring, and Kirk Cousins bolting for the Atlanta Falcons, it makes sense for the Vikings to try and land their “QB of the future.” And now, according to a recent report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Vikings may be zeroing in on a specific quarterback if they were to trade up.

Report Suggests the Vikings Could Trade Up for QB Prospect

Fowler reported on ESPN this week, “Drake Maye, I’ve heard from multiple league execs he has the most upside of any of the quarterbacks in this draft, maybe any player in this draft. […] There’s a belief among some teams that Minnesota could try to trade up to get him. It would take a lot, but they are armed with two first-round picks to try to make it happen.”

This is an interesting turn of events after a week that has seen so much hype surrounding other quarterback prospects. For example, J.J. McCarthy has been skyrocketing up draft boards this spring, and earlier in the week, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network suggested that the Michigan QB could be in play for the Washington Commanders with the second overall pick.

Of course, both items could be true. While much of the league may see Maye as a top-tier prospect, there could be aspects of McCarthy’s game that appeal to them such as his consistently sharp accuracy and proven ability to step up in big moments.

If the Commanders were to select McCarthy second overall, it would more than likely send both Maye and Jayden Daniels of LSU down the board, unless the Chicago Bears do something crazy with the first overall pick and don’t take Caleb Williams.

It may create a frenzy among QB-needy teams to move up in the draft as well, but unless the Arizona Cardinals want to get involved, the Vikings are poised to win any trade battles with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.

The reasoning behind that revolves around the fact that Minnesota holds multiple first-round picks in this spring’s draft, and particularly in the Los Angeles Chargers’ case, they probably won’t be all that excited to trade with either of Denver or Las Vegas considering they are division rivals.

Regardless, the Vikings may have their sights set on their next quarterback.
