The View from VT: Bittersweet Cousins News, Belichick to MIN, & The 1 Contract Issue
Vikings Territory works in partnership with PurplePTSD, similarly doing their utmost to put forth excellent Minnesota Vikings content. As a result, we promote what they have to offer in “The View from VT,” a weekly piece. Take a look at five of their articles from the past week.
The View from VT: February 3rd, 2024
1) It’s a Bittersweet Kirk Cousins Update: Obviously, it’s wonderful news that Kirk Cousins is recovering so well from his Achilles tear. He was playing arguably the best football of his career in 2023, so the timing for his first ever major injury is pretty cruel. The bad news is simply that he seems to be positioning himself for another run at huge money (all of which being guaranteed, of course). Definitely a tricky situation for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to work through.
2) At That, Show Kirk Cousins the Door: The recent reporting suggests that the QB1 is looking for some major money. Not everyone agrees that giving him so much is the best decision in the world. The controversial QB will be 36, is coming off of an Achilles tear, and has never progressed beyond the Divisional Round in the playoffs. So, there’s a limit for how much he can demand.
3) The Belichick + Vikings Chatter Started Sooner Than Expected: A legendary coach who has a legitimate claim on being the best ever. And, as we recently learned, someone whom Cousins would be in favor of playing for. At this point, though, the connection is tenuous. Kevin O’Connell’s seat is only a bit warm.
4) Vikings, Cousins Appear Stuck on One Contract Item: Guaranteed cash. Could it really be anything else? Now, there’s a bit more to it than that. Specifically, how does the guaranteed cash get spread out? Giving a QB a whopper of a payday for a single season is much different than over three or four years. And while most seem to think that the contract will be a pair of seasons, don’t be totally shocked to see the Vikings arrive at a single-season solution.
5) Potential Vikings QB Shines on Tuesday — with GM Watching: Anything less than extensive research into this year’s batch of young passers would be GM malpractice by Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Thankfully, the tidbits of news suggest that he’s putting in the work to learn about the various QBs who are rumored to be plucked in RD1 (and maybe beyond).
