The Minnesota Vikings have quite the cornerback battle on their hands this summer.

However, it appears that one player no longer will be a part of it. On Tuesday, the Vikings made the decision to release veteran cornerback Joejuan Williams in the wake of a report that Jerry Jacobs, one of the top remaining free agents at the position, would be visiting Eagan in the coming days.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network had the scoop on this news, tweeting, “The #Vikings released veteran CB Joejuan Williams, per source.”

Williams was a second-round pick by the New England Patriots during the 2019 NFL Draft, being selected 45th overall. The cornerback spent his collegiate days at Vanderbilt, playing three seasons for the Commodores.

In total, Williams recorded 119 tackles, six tackles for loss, 25 passes defended, four interceptions, and a forced fumble during his time at Vanderbilt. All four of those interceptions came during his final season of 2018.

Williams spent four seasons in New England, but he never really lived up to that second-round status with the Patriots. He appeared in 36 games and made one start during his time with the team, amassing 44 tackles and eight passes defended.

When he entered free agency last spring, he signed with the Vikings but was waived prior to the start of the season and began the year on the practice squad. The Chicago Bears then swooped in and signed him off the practice squad, allowing him to play four games in the Windy City.

Chicago then released Williams on Halloween, and he returned to Minnesota where he finished the regular season, appearing in two games down the stretch and recording a pair of passes defended as well as a single tackle.

With the release of Williams, the Vikings now have an open spot on their 90-man roster that can be used on a different potential contributor.
