The Minnesota Vikings pulled off a couple fantastic trades to get playmakers in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Vikings landed J.J. McCarthy to become their QB of the future while also bringing in Dallas Turner to be a ferocious pass rushing presence on the defensive front. Of course, those two moves cost multiple Vikings draft picks both in 2024 and 2025. Here is a look at where Minnesota stands in terms of draft capital as Day 2 approaches.

Of course, the Vikings don’t hold any picks in either of the second or third rounds (as of now). We knew that likely would be the case prior to the draft beginning, though. Minnesota sent their third-round pick to Detroit about 18 months ago as part of the T.J. Hockenson trade while they sent their second-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for No. 23.

However, the Vikings did send away multiple Day 3 picks to make their first-round moves possible. With the first-round dust settled, here is where Minnesota stands in terms of their remaining draft capital:

  • No. 108 (fourth round)
  • No. 177 (sixth round)
  • No. 203 (sixth round)
  • No. 230 (seventh round)
  • No. 232 (seventh round)

Of course, that very well could change in the next 24 hours. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has already swung two trades in this draft, but if those are the only two deals that are made, it would mark 2024 as the fewest draft weekend trades during the GM’s tenure in Minnesota.

Adofo-Mensah made three trades last spring throughout the draft weekend, and in 2022, he made a whopping six trades throughout the three days.

As a result, more moves should be expected, particularly because the Vikings don’t have much in terms of draft capital during the 2025 draft. If things stand pat, Minnesota is slated to make only three total selections next spring. They hold their first-round pick as well as two fifth-round picks. They could pick up a comp pick or two, but the point stands. Next year’s draft looks thin for Minnesota.

Regardless, the first round was a masterclass by Adofo-Mensah in terms of getting immediate contributors at premium positions. We’ll see what happens throughout the rest of the weekend.

The second round begins on Friday night at 6 PM Central.
