Step 2 for the Vikings Hasn’t Arrived Yet

The main component of releasing Dalvin Cook was … releasing Dalvin Cook. A former 2nd-round selection and a 4-time Pro Bowler, Cook is one of the NFL’s preeminent players, so simply cutting him is news enough.

Nevertheless, there’s another component of deal that hasn’t yet been realized. Cutting a player means there’s an open roster spot. As of right now, that spot hasn’t been filled. In other words, Step 2 for the Vikings hasn’t arrived yet.

What’s the hold up?

Admittedly, the above question is a bit tongue in cheek. Teams regularly take their time to fill out the roster. Moving on from Cook and then launching directly into June minicamp is plenty for the team’s decision makers to focus on, so the fact there there’s no signing isn’t a major deal.

Danielle Hunter’s extension, or lack thereof, is hanging over the roster right now. Tossing several million more into Hunter’s bank account seems like a wise investment since the elite pass rusher is essentially irreplaceable. That’s an item that rightly exists as a high priority in Minnesota.

Even firming up that relationship with Hunter doesn’t totally eliminate the team’s need for a pass rusher. Not too long ago, former Vikings GM Jeff Diamond called for Minnesota to consider adding free agent Justin Houston: “Houston contributed 9.5 sacks, 17 QB hits, 7 tackles for loss, and 21 tackles in his 12th NFL season. He’s 34 years old but obviously stays in excellent shape as a player who never seems to age.”

Houston is still a free agent.

Another name that Diamond highlights? Marcus Peters, a corner who has played at an all-pro level previously. He’s obviously a fair bit older now, but a corner room that’s plentiful in youth may benefit from an elder statesman.

The point, folks, is simply that options exist (even with the bad news of missing out on Leonard Floyd). Free agency still boasts some notable talent, the team has an open roster slot, and there is cap room.

Before training camp arrives, the Vikings will address the unused spot by bringing someone aboard. Maybe that means signing a depth option, handing out a larger deal to an impact veteran, or perhaps even Kwesi Adofo-Mensah venturing into his 16th trade.

Just know that Step 2 of the Dalvin deal – finding someone to take his roster spot – is still in the works.
