Vikings Podcast: The Purple, The Panthers, and The Pessimism at 1-3

Falling to 0-4 would have been a disaster. Thankfully, Minnesota overcame an underwhelming Carolina football team, leaving a small glimmer of hope for the 2023 season.

The latest episode of Notes from the North — a humble Vikings podcast — responds to how the purple overcame the Panthers. Or, put differently, what should be taken from the Vikings’ 21-13 victory over Carolina. No one is mistaking the Panthers for a Super Bowl contender, and yet getting a win is always to be celebrated in the NFL.

Take a peak at what Sizzlin’ Sam had to say about the latest episode: “Kyle and Sam are excited to get a chance to talk about the Vikings finally getting into the win column, despite the fact there are still concerns about the strength of this football team. They discuss their takeaways from the game, the themes of this season, and what this all means for a challenging week 5 matchup against Kansas City.”

How much of a difference did Marcus Davenport make?

The former Saint gave Flores’ crew a needed spark, especially in the final half of the game. The attention he demanded (alongside Danielle Hunter’s usual respect from the opposition) allowed for others to thrive. One thinks of D.J. Wonnum and Patrick Jones both having their best games of the season.

Of course, Harrison Smith stole the show. The old fella stick has it, folks, a development that will be welcome news in The Gopher State. Sensational stuff from Smith as he climbed to a trio of sacks alongside a pair of TFLs, a forced fumble, and 14 tackles.

Meanwhile, the offense had a day to forget. The turnover differential continued going in the wrong direction since the Vikings let a pair of interceptions occur. The first squarely falls on Kirk Cousins since he badly misjudged his ability to get the ball to K.J. Osborn. Instead of scoring, the Vikings allowed the Panthers to get a pick-six.

More troubling, perhaps, is that Ed Ingram whiffed on a block that eventually ended in another Cousins interception. The QB1 was getting hit as he let go of the ball, so it’s hard to find too much fault in his pass failing to get to its intended spot.

Dalton Risner is in the building and has a good understanding of the offense, but he remains a backup. Does that change at some point?
