Vikings Podcast: Deflated and Despairing while Overcoming Green Bay

Very seldom has a team felt so good after climbing to 3-4. Very seldom has a team felt so defeated after climbing to 4-4.

On the latest episode of Notes from the North — a humble Vikings podcast — Sizzlin’ Sam and I get into what that entails, covering everything from the game itself to the approach at the trade deadline. Kirk Cousins has been playing the best football of his career but his 2023 season will be cut short due to his Achilles injury. The Vikings will thus need to pivot toward Jaren Hall and/or Nick Mullens to get the job done.

Take a look at what Sizzlin’ Sam has to say about the episode: “Kyle and Sam break down a costly win for the Vikings over the Packers. Cousins injury is the story of the day, and between the great team performance yesterday and the trade deadline tomorrow, Notes from the North try and figure out where the Vikings go from here.”

It’s a cruel irony that Lambeau Field is once again claiming a Viking due to an Achilles injury. Last season, Brian O’Neill got knocked out for the remainder of the year due to the injury. Fast forward a year and the same injury is afflicting Cousins.

A positive from the game is the play of Jordan Addison, who got the better of Packers’ CB1 Jaire Alexander on several occasions. The rookie receiver is going to be special. Whoever lines up under center is going to have the benefit of playing behind a strong offensive line and throwing to a top-tier pair of receivers once Justin Jefferson returns.

The podcast ventures into the defensive performance a bit, offering praise for Danielle Hunter, D.J. Wonnum, and the safety trio. Brian Flores has his crew improving on a weekly basis.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is in an unenviable situation. At 4-4, the Vikings are a team that’s right in the middle of the NFC playoff race. With Cousins on the field, there would be considerable merit in bringing help aboard. Does the injury change things? That’s an answer for the GM to decide. Whoever gets onboarded would need to fit into his competitive rebuild philosophy (keep an eye on the Titans).
