Vikings Podcast: Clearing Cap Space (Pt. 1)

Yesterday, the news emerged that Minnesota (like the rest of the NFL) would be dealing with an expanded budget in 2024. That’s good news, especially since things are pretty snug right now. On the most recent episode of Notes from the North – a humble Vikings podcast – Sam and I consider how roster shuffling for the defensive players could lead to massive cap room.

Take a look at what Sam has to say: “On this weeks episode, Kyle takes on the responsibility of finding a possible path to clearing 50 million in cap space focusing solely on players contracts on the defense.”

The team’s finances dictate that difficult decisions will need to be made. When we consider how the defense played in 2022 (poorly) alongside the reality that Ed Donatell has been fired, we can be fairly certain some major changes are upcoming. Players like Eric Kendricks, Za’Darius Smith, Harrison Smith, Danielle Hunter, and Cameron Dantzler (among others) are all discussed.

A final note on the topic: as we say on the podcast, our discussion is neither predictive nor prescriptive. Instead, we’re simply discussing options the team can pursue (according to Over the Cap).

Once again, no hockey talk this week. At some point, it’ll reemerge. Until then, I hope that the Wild fans are contenting themselves with watching their team.

Folks who are into Vikings podcasts or think they’d like to get into Vikings podcasts should feel free to give Notes from the North a shot. Hop over to iTunes, Spotify, or Podbean. My understanding is that you don’t need an account at these spots. Just press play and enjoy the pod.

Enjoy the listening, Vikings fan.
