Vikings Podcast: Bye Week Banter

First off, I’ll send along my apologies for missing a week. In my absence, Sizzlin’ Sam held down the fort, putting together a brief episode titled “Monday Night Meltdown as Bears Break Vikings.”

More recently, Sizzlin’ Sam and I returned to the microphone. The latest episode of Notes from the North — a Vikings podcast — spends some time unpacking where Minnesota finds itself following Week 13. How are things looking in the playoff race? What lies ahead? Are there reasons for optimism? Who gets the start at QB?

As per tradition, Sizzlin’ Sam gets the first word. Let’s see what my co-host has to say when it comes to describing the episode: “Kyle and Sam are back to talk Vikings during the bye week. From making sense of the season thus far, to looking ahead to playoff possibilities, we’ve got you covered.”

Somehow, Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings are sitting in the NFC’s #6 seed.

The Packers and Rams have been surging, making the playoff race considerably tighter for the Vikings. Working in Minnesota’s favor is that the Seahawks are doing poorly, meaning the 6th slot has been vacated. Due to tiebreakers, the Vikings have the slot but failing to bounce back following the bye will mean Minnesota is on the outside looking in for the playoffs.

The opening game following the bye will come against the Raiders in Sin City. Minnesota is superior to Las Vegas, but that simple reality won’t matter too much when the game is played. Both sides will start with zero points and then trot eleven players onto the field. Whichever side does a better job will pickup the win.

The question that’s prominent in sports bars from Warroad to St. Cloud is who will get the nod under center. Truth be told, no one outside of the Vikings’ building truly knows, but the best bet may be Nick Mullens. The veteran is highly regarded in Eagan.

Josh Dobbs is capable of pulling off magic on the football field. He’s a competitor and has some great athleticism. However, the downside is that he can often try to do too much, leading to the turnover issues that have sunk Minnesota in various games across the 2023 season.

Enjoy the listening, Vikings fan.
