The Minnesota Vikings have a number of areas on their roster that could bear for some improving. Recently, we posted a poll both here on PurplePTSD as well as VikingsTerritory asking Vikings fans which position they most wanted to see improved this offseason during the free agency period.

Well, 2308 fans casted their votes in the poll, and overwhelmingly, these Vikings fans want major free agency upgrades at the cornerback position. 46% of the vote went to the cornerback spot while 26.1% voted for linebacker, 19.5% voted for interior defensive line, and 8.4% voted for wide receiver.

This result makes a lot of sense. The Vikings had one of the worst pass defenses in the league during the 2022 season, allowing the second-most passing yards in the league and the third-most yards per attempt.

Then, some of the key players from the 2022 season are set to hit free agency this offseason as well. Both Patrick Peterson and Duke Shelley have expiring contracts, and they will be free agents when the period begins on March 15th.

Minnesota is left with a CB room looking like Kalon Barnes, Andrew Booth Jr., Cam Dantzler, Akayleb Evans, and Tay Gowan. There absolutely should be an emphasis from the Vikings to, at the very least, add more depth to this extremely young group.

A veteran presence shouldn’t be too difficult to find, either. There will be a number of players available to Minnesota in free agency. A few names that we’ve discussed on this site include Sean Murphy-Bunting out of Tampa Bay, Byron Murphy out of Arizona, and my own personal choice, Cameron Sutton out of Pittsburgh.

In all, the Minnesota Vikings have a number of upgrades to make during free agency. However, fans may be correct that cornerback should be the position given the most attention during this spring. Finding a veteran presence to lead the young guys in the secondary could be of vital importance if the Vikings hope to compete in 2023.
