Purple Headlines of the Week: 2023 Training Camp Begins, Cousins Contract Talks, Hunter’s New Deal

The Minnesota Vikings took the field for their first week of training camp, and we finally have some real football to talk about. In this week’s purple headlines, we’ll go over the first take aways from camp as well as some new contract developments within the team.
Takeaways from the First Week of Camp

In the early days of training camp, there are already some interesting developments that have taken place. For instance, Joejuan Williams has gotten a number of snaps with the starters to begin camp, something that may come as a surprise considering he has largely been a backup throughout his NFL career.
To get a look at a few of the other takeaways from the first week of camp, head over to this article as well.
Danielle Hunter’s New Contract

Danielle Hunter began training camp by undergoing a hold in, reporting to camp but not participating in practices. However, that seems to have changed as of Sunday with the pass rusher inking a new one-year contract worth $20 million to remain with the team for this season.
A notable part of this deal is a no-tag clause, meaning the Vikings cannot franchise tag him in 2024. He will hit free agency next spring unless a long-term deal can be worked out prior to March.
Kirk Cousins Contract Talks

During mandatory minicamp, Kirk Cousins stated that he didn’t expect to have any more contract discussions with the Vikings until next March during free agency.
However, the discussion once again popped up in the first week of training camp, with Cousins being asked about potentially getting a new deal. This time, he didn’t shut the idea down, instead saying that he is simply letting his agent, Mike McCartney, take care of it.
“I tell Mike, ‘You don’t call me until you’ve got something that’s worth talking about […] You just call me when there’s something that you need my feedback on. Until then, Mike, we’ve done this for 12 years, I’ll trust you to handle it,’” Cousins said. “So, I just let Mike do his job and my expectation is until he calls me I’m just able to focus on football. And he shouldn’t be calling me unless there’s something of note.”
