Training camp for the Minnesota Vikings is just a few days away. Rookies report to camp on Sunday, July 23rd while veterans will follow suit two days later on Tuesday, July 25th.

Ahead of camp’s beginning, though, the Vikings have made another roster move. The team announced on Wednesday afternoon that they are waiving CB John Reid to free up a spot on the 90-man roster. The roster now technically sits at 89 players, but because Junior Aho is a roster exemption, they have two spots available.

Reid, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, spent his collegiate career playing for the Penn State Nittany Lions before being selected 141st overall by the Houston Texans. He played 13 games for Houston during his rookie season, making a start in Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Prior to the start of the 2021 season, the Texans opted to trade the CB to the Seattle Seahawks where he spent his second season and played 11 games, starting twice with the defense. In all, he recorded 12 tackles and defended a pair of passes for the Seahawks.

Change of scenery once again struck Reid in 2022, though. Prior to the season, he was placed on IR before being released in October. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in late November, but the Titans signed him onto their active roster just a couple weeks later.

With the Titans, Reid would play three games and start in Week 15 against the Chargers. In that start, the CB recorded five tackles and played a total of 33 defensive snaps. However, the Titans would waive him following Week 17, and he once again landed with the Falcons but wouldn’t appear in another game.

This spring, the Vikings added Reid to their roster, hoping to add any semblance of veteran depth to their extremely young cornerback room.

Now that Minnesota has opted to waive him, the Vikings have just three cornerbacks on their roster entering at least their third NFL season: Byron Murphy (fifth season), Joejuan Williams (fifth season), and Tay Gowan (third season). Murphy is also the only Vikings CB who has started more than two games at the NFL level.

This puts even more onus on the young Vikings CBs to catch onto Brian Flores’ defense in training camp. Luckily, considering Flores largely has put his corners in man coverage throughout his coaching career, this shouldn’t be too difficult of a scheme to learn. It all lies on whether or not the players have the talent to keep up at the highest level of football.

In just a few short days, we’ll get to see the Vikings CBs in action.
