The next step is a consideration of the Adofo-Mensah free agent signings.

The 2023 NFL Draft Order Is Set

Some important details to help make sense of what you’ll find below.

Keep in mind that we’re only dealing with free agent signings. So, for instance, you won’t find the extension for C.J. Ham included since that wasn’t a deal to bring in a free agent. What you will find is the deal to retain Garrett Bradbury for three seasons since that was a situation where the player’s contract was coming to an end.

For the most part, practice squad deals aren’t included. The exceptions rest in the moments when the practice squad player made the jump to the active roster. Duke Shelley stands out as the best example. Forgive me if I’ve missed some of the practice squaders who made the jump (more on my potential foibles below).

I opted to avoid including UDFAs. I’ll put together a separate article for UDFA signings that’s similar to the draft pick format. To my mind, a UDFA straddles the divide between being a draft pick and being a free agent signing. That complexity warrants a separate piece (at least to my mind).

In each entry, there’s an effort to relay the basic contract details while then offering a follow-up line to clarify how the cap works.

Far too often, the annual average gets jammed into headlines to explain what a player received. The actual reality of how the deal impacts a team’s budget in a single season can get lost in the weeds of gaudy per-year average. To help get closer to reality, I’ve tossed in the Year 1 Cap Hit (Y1C) in each entry as a number and percentage. Ideally, readers will gain a slightly better sense of how contracts – even the large ones – interact with a team’s salary cap.

Over the Cap proved indispensable for this piece, just as the Vikings’ website was similarly crucial. In moments where a player’s cap situation isn’t super straightforward, I outsource the complexity to OTC, a spot that’s far more capable of accounting for the accounting.
