Poetry Slam—It’s Vikings Bye-ku Week!

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Minnesota Vikings
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

It’s week 13, and the Vikings have finally reached their bye-week, and it couldn’t be any more welcome. The team is banged up and in need of a rest and looking forward to the return of star wideout Justin Jefferson. Therefore, no Vikings game this weekend, which means the return of our bye-week tradition: Vikings Bye-kus! We know you’ve been waiting with bated breath for these haikus offered below, and that you’re excited to get writing your own.

Remember, the only haiku rules we require are that your Viking bye-kus contain five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second and five again in the third. Plus, the bye-ku must have some reference to the natural world (see “snow” in the first one below)—although we are very generous with our interpretation of what is included in the natural world.”

The key is to have fun while the Vikings are on their bye-week—and we’ve found writing Vikings Bye-kus is a good game plan. Try a few yourself and add them to the comments on Facebook. You are all Vikings poets, after-all, having experienced the pain and joy of lifelong Purple fandom. Let’s hear them. Skol!

Bye comes late this year.
Two losses after five dubs
Snow and wins here soon.

JJ’s coming back
Hands rise skyward for footballs
Returns just in time.

Ground can’t cause fumbles
Picked passes defy logic
Blame’s on the Purple.

QB carousel
Turns once again at The Vault
Need one fast on turf.

Who is the RB?
Few have yet logged great numbers
Hang on to the rock!

D like Gibraltar
Has kept the team in most games
Can’t hold forever.

The Case for Josh Dobbs
Escapes rush like Harry H
Don’t throw when near Earth.

Nick Mullens is back
Will he hit the ground running?
Hoping he’s not sacked.

All Hail Jaren Hall
‘Cause his skill‘s still shrouded in
Purple morning mist.

Calls for KO’s head
Are bizarre as snow in June
Young, and on the rise.

Fill Vikes ship with cash
Sail it to B-Flo harbor
“Please stay ‘nother year!”

JJ, and TJ
AJ, KJ and non J’s
Let the offense fly!

Packers up ahead
Two with the Lions to play
Can still defend North.

0 and 3 to start
Buried deep within the soil
Vikes rise toward playoffs.

Kirk hurt, and JJ
Cam, Hicks, others hit the deck
Won’t stop Purple storm.

It’s Winter “Skolstice”
Playoff teams hit their stride now
Error margin nil.
