On October 29th in a game in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Vikings season turned upside down.

Kirk Cousins was maneuvering his way around pressure against the Packers defense and suddenly was unable to move up in the pocket. The Vikings QB hobbled off the field, and it was quickly confirmed that he tore his Achilles and his season was over.

Minnesota was just starting to hit their stride offensively when the injury occurred. They had just beaten the San Francisco 49ers the week before and possessed a sizable lead vs the Packers at Lambeau Field. It’s been a combination of Josh Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall since, and the Vikings offense hasn’t looked like the same unit.

Kirk Cousins joined ESPN’s Adam Schefter on his podcast on Monday, and he remains hopeful about his future in Minnesota.

“I would love to be back in Minnesota. Hopefully, we can make that happen.” He also went on to say that his main focus right now is supporting his teammates “in any we that I can.”

Again talking on the “Adam Schefter Podcast,” Cousins seems very optimistic about getting back to playing great football following his major injury.

Cousins mentioned a couple of teammates that tore their Achilles and came back better than ever, including Jordan Hicks and running back Cam Akers. The 35-year-old quarterback signal caller continued to reiterate that he believes his best football is ahead of him and that a lot of the game is mental.

“I do believe my best football is still up ahead of me. But I got to go prove that with the way I heal up and then with the way I play up ahead,” Cousins said.

Kirk goes on with his conversation with Schefter and points to the fact that he will lean on his “past experiences” to make sure he comes back better than ever. This is the first time in his long career that he has ever missed games due to injury, so he recognizes that this is a new experience for him as an NFL quarterback.

Cousins knows he has a lot of football ahead of him and states that it would be “hard” for him to walk away when he has so much left to give to the game.

Moving focus to his contract, and if talks have picked up at all, the soon-to-be free agent quarterback says it is a conversation that’ll have to wait, as it “tends to be more of a February, March conversation. And this is more right now about just finishing the season.” He also spoke about how he wants this team to get to the playoffs and be successful when they get there.

It will definitely be an interesting couple months as the Vikings have a lot of decisions to make about the quarterback position. Do they turn back to Kirk Cousins, who’s the most comfortable in Kevin O’Connell’s system, but also is coming off a major injury at 35 years old? Or do they look to the draft, as it looks to be one of the best classes in the past decade? Either way, the Vikings offense is loaded with talent and weapons, so it’ll be fun to watch which quarterback gets the chance to lead the way.
