What Vikings Fans Should Be Hoping to See at The Senior Bowl

Some news that has been lost in the shuffle is that the Senior Bowl is currently underway, an event that should be of interest to Vikings fans. Take a peak at who Dane Brugler – the draft expert for The Athletic – ranks as his best non-QB prospects.

Apparently, Jermaine Johnson had a really strong day. Josh Frey has done a fair bit of work on college prospects (something that will continue), and I’ve been hammering home the idea that the team needs to prioritize the defensive line. Perhaps Johnson will end up in purple.

While Vikings fans ought to be interested in all the Senior Bowl prospects, allow me to suggest that we ought to be most interested in the QBs.

As I’ve previously argued, the 12th spot in the draft could be supremely valuable. There are plenty of non-QB prospects who look like surefire top-10 picks. The QBs, on the other hand, are all over the place. Now, that doesn’t mean several quarterbacks won’t be picked early. Every draft we see teams try to pick their next franchise QB. Seeing Joe Burrow’s success will do little to dampen the NFL’s QB mania.

Sam Howell, Malik Willis, and Desmond Ridder are all in attendance (among others). If a couple QBs really stand out, expect teams to adjust their draft boards. That may end up being a good thing if the Vikings are intereted in trading back.

Frankly, I’m not super interested in selecting a QB at 12. That may be because I’m ignorant about how talented this year’s QBs are (a fair criticism). I’m focused on improving that defense, especially up front. The Wilfs’ statements about getting back into contention immediately suggests a certain well-paid QB may stick around.

For this reason, I’m taking a wait-and-see approach, one that quietly hopes a team offers a boatload for the 12th overall pick. Such a haul can do much to get a team back into relevance.
