The Assistant Coach Dominoes Begin to Fall
Only Mike Zimmer was fired, but we’ve long known there would be further change to the coaching staff. Vikings assistant coaches like Adam Zimmer and Klint Kubiak seemed to be as good as gone. Well, it appears as though that process has begun.
Apparently, Klint Kubiak will be joining Nathaniel Hackett in Denver:
Hackett, of course, was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay, so he’s likely familiar with Kubiak. It’s also worth remembering that Kubiak has connections to the Broncos organization. His father was their head coach not too long ago.
There are also some rumors swirling that the Vikings may be bringing in someone notable to join their assistant coaches. Vic Fangio – the former Bears DC and Broncos HC – is supposed to be a leading candidate to take over at DC if Jim Habaugh is hired: “a Harbaugh addition to the Vikings increases the likelihood Fangio would run his defense. You remember the one – Fangio’s defense guided the 49ers to three consecutive NFC Championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013. The man can coach a defense.” Indeed, he certainly can.
Obviously, there’s a fair bit that still needs to be decided. Harbaugh hasn’t been hired, though it certainly feels like the news will arrive sooner rather than later. The franchise, in all likelihood, wants to fully move forward with their offseason plan. That means finishing off the coaching hires (and fires) so that the full leadership is in place.
Once that gets sorted out, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will begin to reshape the roster. There’s a fair bit of work that needs to be done to get the finances in order. It’s by no means an impossible task, and yet it’s one that does need a sense of urgency. Hiring a new head coach will thus take place in the coming days.
