Keep an Eye on The Seahawks

Recently, the Seahawks have made some massive changes. Foremost among them was the trade involving Russell Wilson, though we shouldn’t overlook the Bobby Wagner release. There’s a pretty reasonable case to be made that he’s the best LB of his generation, so moving on is noteworthy. What’ll be fascinating to monitor is if the Seahawks and Vikings are involved in any business in the coming days.

Currently, Seattle has very little chance of competing in 2022. With Wilson under center, they limped to a 7-10 record. Subtracting a true QB1 will only make matters worse, especially since they share a division with the 49ers, Cards, and Rams.

It’s this reality that has me wondering whether the Vikings will work the phones with the Seahawks (perhaps trhey already are).

Shelby Harris was part of the deal sending Wilson to Denver. The 31-year-old vet has two years on his deal. The 2022 number comes in at just under $8 million and the 2023 number is an unguaranteed $9 million. Both numbers are manageable, especially given his level of play. If things were to go poorly this year, the Vikings could move on with no financial ramifications in 2023. It’s hard to think trading for Harris would cost anymore than a mid-rounder. We can feel confident he’d fit Minnesota well given his history with Donatell in Denver.

Poona Ford is another defensive lineman to keep in mind. At 26, Ford likely has a lot more football left in him. The cost would therefore be higher to acquire him. The appeal is obvious. He finished the year as the 19th-best DT on PFF. In fact, he has four strong years behind him, suggesting he’d be capable of improving Minnesota’s DL. His 2022 cap hit is just over $10 million.

If they wanted to do something really wild, D.K. Metcalf or Tyler Lockett would be fascinating additions. For either of these two additions to make sense, Minnesota would need to have moved on from Adam Thielen (which is a very real possibility). Upon first glance, Metcalf has the skill set that would best complement Justin Jefferson; Minnesota’s sophomore phenom will be gobbling up plenty of slot snaps. Partnering him with Metcalf would be an absolute nightmare for opposing defenses.

The cost for Metcalf would be large, so I wouldn’t be holding my breath on this one.

Otherwise, one wonders about vets like Jamal Adams, Carlos Dunlap, Chris Carson, and even punter Michael Dickson. It’s hard to envision any of them ending up in purple, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Seattle move on from them.

At this stage, the Vikings may not be thinking about the Seahawks at all, but the Harris connection is one to monitor. The defense needs a talent infusion, and a veteran DL like Harris could really help.
