Justin Jefferson Doesn’t Like Money

Following the 2022 NFL season, one of the biggest stories around the league is going to be Justin Jefferson’s contract extension. Over his first two years in the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings receiver has recorded the most receiving yards in the league and quickly established himself as one of the best players in football with the goal of being the NFL’s best receiver.

Because of these incredible accomplishments of the years, many assumed that Jefferson’s extension would be one of, if not the most lucrative contract a wide receiver has ever gotten in NFL history. However, Jefferson made a comment yesterday during his press conference that should be music to Vikings fans’ ears.
Jefferson was asked about his extension, and he gave the usual answer that he would focus on it when the season ended. However, he also added a little tidbit at the end that he is “not too fond of money”.
Now, there is no reason to believe that this means Justin Jefferson’s next contract won’t be lucrative. Jefferson will surely be paid a large chunk of cash from the Vikings when the 2022 season wraps up. That said, perhaps there won’t be much drama behind these extension talks like we’ve seen across the league from the likes of Deebo Samuel.
Per Spotrac, the Vikings currently have about $60 million in projected cap space for the 2024 season, and if Jefferson is willing to help the franchise out by taking a smidge less money than projected, it could help the team land other big free agents. Currently, the highest paid wide receiver in 2022 is Cooper Kupp at $30 million.
All in all, these comments should have Vikings fans happy. They suggest a player with a clear focus on continuously getting better on the field, regardless of compensation. Jefferson’s goal for the 2022 season is to become the best receiver in the NFL, particularly by catching Davante Adams. If he continues to progress like he has in recent years, he is on the fast track towards doing so.
