At this stage, there are plenty of candidates included in the Minnesota head coach pile. As of today, another name needs to be added on: Rams DC Raheem Morris.

Vikings fans may remember him from Week 6 of the 2020 season. Minnesota was a brutal 1-4 entering the game against the Falcons, a team that was in a mess following their 0-5 start. The Vikings, being fully on brand, decided to completely blow the game, losing to an inferior Falcons team.

Morris is currently the defensive coordinator for the LA Rams. That defense absolutely dominated Kliff Kingsbury, Kyler Murray, and the rest of the Cardinals’ offense. Having Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey doesn’t hurt, but don’t forget that there has been an awful lot of shuffling in that LA secondary. From the outside looking in, it certainly appears that Morris is doing well.

The #1 quality the Vikings owners ought to be looking for in their next head coach is someone who can lead. In other words, someone who can teach and motivate a group of 53 players. The Schrager tweet suggests Morris may indeed be that person. It’s a main reason why Minnesota is considering him to be their head coach.

He has previously been the HC in Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Otherwise, he has been a defensive coordinator, secondary coach, wide receiver coach, and a handful of other positions. At 45 years old, Morris would be a young-ish hire. Unlike LaFleur and McVay et al., Morris’s background is defense.

A lot still needs to happen before Minnesota decides on their next head coach. A new GM needs to be hired, and there are several more HC candidates to consider. One thing that will be fascinating to watch is how the Rams perform against Tom Brady and his Bucs. Shutting down Brady & Friends would be a statement to the rest of the league that Morris deserves the recognition he’s getting.
