Today is The Day, Vikings Fans
We’ve known for a little while that Monday, April 11 is an important day on the Vikings calendar. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see it arrive. The Vikings are officially beginning their offseason program, beginning with voluntary workouts.
I, for one, will be keeping an eye on the official Vikings twitter account today. One of the more fascinating parts of the day will rest in who decides to show up to these workouts.
The above video shows Adam Thielen and Irv Smith Jr. arriving. We all expected the veteran receiver to be there. What’s more encouraging is Smith Jr.’s presence. It’s not that I didn’t expect him to attend. After all, he’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, so he ought to be supremely motivated to show the organization that he’s worth investing a massive contract into. The notable portion of things comes from the fact that he missed all of last season due to injury. Getting him back into that offense will mean increased room for all of the other skill players.
We’ll need to wait and see who else arrives. I’m expecting a strong attendance. The players seem enthused about Kevin O’Connell and the coaching staff. Plus, the team could have opted for an April 4 start date. Instead, the leadership pushed things back by a week. Generally speaking, players look favorably on a coach who is willing to offer his guys more rest.
A recent piece on Vikings.com clarified what this day means: “The Vikings certainly can’t win any games on the 2022 schedule by having a productive day. But O’Connell and his staff, which is almost made up of entirely new faces, can join with the players in helping lay the groundwork for the months that lie ahead.” Well said.
The Vikings offseason program is underway, folks. Partner that with the ongoing free agency and the draft and it’s easy to see why purple fans are feeling hopeful.
