The combine is scheduled to take place next week, and the Vikings are surely hoping to glean insights that will further reinforce and clarify their player evaluations. A recent report, though, suggested there may be quite a few less players in attendance.

Apparently, somewhere around 155 players were looking to withdraw due to concerns about the Covid-19 protocols:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, 155 players represented by 13 different agencies are prepared to announce on Monday a formal boycott of the 2022 Scouting Combine.

The NFL issued on Saturday an email regarding restrictions that will apply to this year’s Combine, due to the ongoing pandemic. The league intends to create a bubble environment, which will strictly limit the ability of players to interact with others.

Previously, the expected number of attendees was somewhere around 324 players. That’s how many invites were sent out. Subtracting 155 players thus brings things down by a considerable margin.

Later on Monday, the NFL decided to reverse their decision: “The NFL and the Scouting Combine, facing a threat that 157 players represented by 14 agencies would skip workouts at next week’s annual Underwear Olympics, has ditched a controversial bubble concept for Indianapolis.”

In the past, the Vikings have showed the relevance of the combine in their selections. Cameron Dantzler comes to mind. The reports suggested that his college film was really strong, and yet he ran a really slow 40-yard dash. That contributed to him tumbling into the third round, where the Vikings chose him.

Danielle Hunter may also be another name to consider. Unlike Dantzler, Hunter showed sensational upside in his workouts but limited production on the field. Again, he was chosen in the third round. It will go down as one of the team’s very best selections.
