Many fans welcomed the news that Mike Zimmer wouldn’t be the team’s head coach moving forward. Still others expressed enthusiasm about finally moving on from Rick Spielman. Since that time, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been hired, and it sure looks like Kevin O’Connell will be the head coach. Unfortunately, all of this change has had a negative repercussion. The Vikings are losing some talented coaches.

Part of what has made losing these coaches so frustrating is that they aren’t leaving for huge promotions. That would be a situation many could understand and support. It always sucks to lose talent, but at least we can cheer on talented Vikings coaches who are moving onto greener pastures. What we’ve been seeing, though, are coaches leaving for a position on par with their current one.

Ryan Ficken will be taking over the special teams for the Chargers. Andrew Janocko will be the QB coach in Chicago. Phil Rauscher is joining the Bills coaching staff. The Star Tribune‘s Ben Goessling made a really good point about these hires:

Good on the ownership for doing right by their people. It speaks well of the organization. Even still, the trend of losing some good coaches is difficult.

Plus, the team has also lost Klint Kubiak to the Broncos. Adam Zimmer will be gone, as well.

Now, it’s worth remembering that the sky isn’t falling. Significant shuffling in the coaching staff always was a possibility. It’s also worth remembering that the team still has talented coaches like Keenan McCardell, Andre Patterson, and Kennedy Polamalu. Moreover, don’t forget that coaches like Vic Fangio, Mike Munchak, and Brian Flores are all still out there. They are all talented coaches who could all be excellent additions to the Vikings’ coaching staff.

So, the Vikings coaching staff will need a fair bit of work. I’d imagine K/O brings in a coach or two from the Rams. The process will then involve filling out the rest of the coaching staff, a job that will be challenging but far from impossible.
