If you partner the seven names listed below with Doug Pederson, the Vikings will find themselves at eight total head coach candidates. The incoming GM – whoever it happens to be – will get some say in who the team decides to hire. That being said, the Vikings’ ownership is looking to begin the process of interviewing candidates. Take a peak at who they’re bringing in:

Not too long ago, I did a head coach power ranking on right here on Purple PTSD. Todd Bowles, Nathaniel Hackett, and Kellen Moore are all on the list. DeMeco Ryans is another name that’s very interesting. Here is what 49ers WebZone had to say: “Ryans previously served as the team’s linebackers coach from 2018-2020 and started his time on Shanahan’s staff as a defensive quality control coach in 2017. This season, the 49ers defense ranked No. 3 in total yards allowed, No. 6 in passing yards allowed, No. 7 in rushing yards allowed, and No. 10 in points allowed.”

Every coach in the above Will Ragatz tweet is currently in the playoffs, so fans can get a chance to see their squads in action.

Frankly, it’s a little bit surprising to see so many defensive coaches on the list. Following Leslie Frazier and Mike Zimmer, one would think the franchise is leaning toward an offensive mind. It’s possible they are, and yet there’s a pretty even split so far. Moreover, it’s notable who was left off. No Brian Daboll, Eric Bieniemy, or Byron Leftwich on that list. Leftwich and Daboll appear to be especially strong candidates, so perhaps Minnesota will put in requests for them soon.

Regardless of who gets chosen for the Vikings head coach position, he will need to methodically rebuild the team’s culture and vision. Zim is a good coach, but it hasn’t always been easy to play for him. A new voice may re-energize a talented roster.

It’s that desire for a different approach that makes Hackett intriguing to me. I know, he comes from the rival Packers, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good coach. The impression one gets is that his energy is infectious. One also gets the sense that he does a really nice job of connecting with his players. He’d be a very intriguing head coach hire for the Vikings.

Otherwise, I’m fascinated by Bowles. He did such excellent job adjusting to Kansas City in the Super Bowl. He is also super aggressive, so watching his defense would be far from boring.

Stay tuned on this one, folks. Minnesota may reach out to more candidates very soon, so this will be an interesting story to follow.
