Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Isn’t Interested in Bidding Wars

Vikings fans have mostly been expressing dismay over how things have gone during free agency. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has preferred the sidelines to the playing field, the punch bowl instead of the dance floor.

Indeed, his approach has mostly been cautious and methodical. There haven’t been any rash decisions. Instead, the Vikings have been able to retain their own talent while slowly rebuilding the team’s middle class.

In his recent presser, KAM clarified that he isn’t interested in being the winner of bidding wars:

This answer speaks to his team-building philosophy, which is becoming clearer and clearer as more time passes. Evidently, the Vikings didn’t have too many plans for outspending rival teams. They could have had enough money to sign J.C. Jackson, Austin Corbett, or several others. They chose not to.

As recently discussed, the painting is still in the works. By the time September gets here, we’ll know if the artist – Kwesi Adofo-Mensah – has put together a beautiful picture. Until then, we’ll only have a partial vision of what’s being put together. We may get a beautiful piece of art; we may get something that doesn’t look great.

The Packers have taken a step back this offseason. Losing Davante Adams hurts, and there’s no guarantee that the Preston Smith/Rashan Gary twosome is as ferocious next season. If one of those pass rushers struggle, the defense will feel it. The NFC North, then, certainly appears more winnable.

Plus, there is still time for the Vikings to make a move or two. There’s now more money due to the Thielen restructure. Any number of other moves could be made to free up even more room.

Bidding wars often lead to tremendous headlines and excitement among the fanbase. Most often, though, they don’t translate to wins. There are exceptions, of course, and lots of teams have found a way to translate critical free agent acquisitions into Super Bowl success. In time, the team will likely snag a more notable name or two. Nevertheless, expect the approach to be intentionally low key.
