Kwesi Adds a Solid Vet to Linebacker Room

The defense, as we all know, needs some work. First, we received the news about Harrison Phillips. Now, it’s Jordan Hicks, a veteran who will likely line up beside Eric Kendricks, as Chad Graff suggests.

The key words in the above tweet are “up to.” It’s a deal that likely contains some incentives, so it’ll be on Jordan Hicks to hit these achievement markers in order to unlock the extra money in the deal.

The 29-year-old graded out as the 30th-best linebacker in last season’s PFF gradings. For whatever it’s worth, he finished as their 4th-best pass rushing LB. Their grading also suggests he did better as a run defender than in pass coverage. He played more than 1000 snaps in the box, but he also traveled into the slot for 72 snaps.

The work at linebacker is far from done. Eric Kendricks and Jordan Hicks can’t be relied upon as the only two. True, there is Troy Dye and Chazz Surratt, but it’s hard to be overly confident in either. Blake Lynch, perhaps, could do more.

As the Tomasson tweet suggests, Hicks has been durable, so that’s obviously something working in his favor. The early reports suggest he has $6.5 million guaranteed.

More moves to follow. The team needs to clear cap space to make it all work, so stay tuned.
