Gotta Hear It: Vikings Quote of the Day — March 29, 2022

Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to [email protected].

This quote is from March 29th, 2022, by Adam Schefter of ESPN, announcing rule changes to overtime:

“Both teams now will be assured of getting the football in overtime during the postseason, per source.

And here’s the official tweet:

This is noteworthy as the sport of football has fundamentally changed. Gone are the days of scoring a touchdown first in overtime and getting the hell off the field. Now, because of what occurred to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 and the Buffalo Bills in 2021, each team will get one possession to score a touchdown. If they both score, the game continues.

At heart, this is further offense-ization of the NFL. Of course, fans will get used to it — and probably learn to cherish the rules. But for defenses and defensive coordinators, the philosophy of “just play good defense” takes a miniature backseat.

And you just know, at some point, the Vikings will be victimized by the rule change — perhaps one of the first snakebitten teams.
