The New Orleans Saints – in many ways – resemble the Minnesota Vikings.

Similar to Minnesota, New Orleans is coming off a thoroughly average season, missing the playoffs with a humdrum 9-8 record. Many (including yours truly) believed that they’d finally rebuild after years of keeping their window open. Instead, they decided to simply re-tool, retaining most of their talent as they manipulated the cap in a manner that allows for 2022 contention.

Many purple critics have accused the Vikings of doing something similar to the Saints, eschewing long-term health in favor of immediate contention (or, at least, an attempt at contention).

If the reports are accurate, New Orleans will give themselves a better shot at getting into the playoffs. Tyrann Mathieu is supposed to be signing with the Saints: “Mathieu just wrapped up a three-year tenure with the Chiefs. He started 16 games in 2021, recording 76 total tackles, three interceptions, six passes defensed, and three fumble recoveries.” The report elsewhere notes that Mathieu should sign in the next few days. He’ll thus join players like Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, and Cameron Jordan as impact defenders in New Orleans.

This is bad news for the Vikings.

Mathieu – not altogether unlike Harrison Smith – is a tremendous safety. He’s capable of impacting the game in a dramatic manner, tilting the advantage toward his team through a timely interception or hit. Though older, Mathieu will still be a strong player for New Orleans.

The Vikings will likely be competing with the Saints for one of the final wild card spots. Plus, they’ll play each other this season, with the rumors suggesting the game will occur in London. When that game is played, let’s hope it’s Minnesota’s new addition at safety who makes the most notable impact on the game.
