Rich Eisen is one of the most respected voices in NFL media. His combine 40-yard dash in a full suit was always fun to see. Recently, Rich Eisen expressed his surprise that Kirk Cousins got another extension.

You can find the clip on YouTube.

The visual reads “Cash Cow Cousins” as it shows the money he has made on fully-guaranteed deals. Eisen draws attention to how Cousins had upside before coming to Minnesota, the implication being that he no longer has upside. That’s largely true. One could have very reasonably concluded that his shortcomings were the fault of Washington. So far, Cousins is showing that the issues he struggled with in the nation’s capitol can’t be solely attributed to his former team.

“He has shown no consistent ability,” Rich Eisen says about Kirk Cousins, “to win big football games. He has shown no success rate in any metric outside of the occasional big-time performance on a Sunday, statistically. And the only other way that he has shown an incredible ability is in this aspect: over $200 million in his career for a .500 record, 2 under in the playoffs.”

That opinion prompts Eisen to offer this conclusion: “And all I can say to Kirk Cousins is ‘you go on with you bad self, sir.'”

Shortly after pointing to the Jets’ offer that allowed him to play hardball with the Vikings, Eisen brings up Rick Spielman. His belief is that Spielman doesn’t believe Minnesota can win with Kirk.

Listen for yourself:

As Darren Wolfson suggests, it’s a classic Spielman answer. The man could be a politician. He does a great job of saying a lot without saying anything.

At the end, Rich Eisen concludes that Kirk Cousins “a brilliant chess master at playing the leverage game.” Indeed, if his career ended today, his legacy would be of someone who overcame his modest draft slot to become of the best-paid football players of his era. Not success on the field or team accomplishments, but remarkable financial success.
