And Danielle Hunter Gets the Assist

The news of the day, of course, rests in the Za’Darius Smith signing. Right or wrong, the Vikings are going for it in 2022. Things haven’t developed as quickly as many hoped, and yet it’s clear the leadership believes they can compete in the upcoming season. One thing that will help make it all work is the restructure on the Danielle Hunter deal:
Freeing this money means that Smith can be brought aboard. The team can thus boast a really intimidating pair along the edge. Perhaps they’ll even have enough to make some more moves.
One wonders if these moves will end up proving to be the right decisions. Both players are older and coming off major injuries, so there is a fair bit of risk.
The upside, though, is huge. It’s near impossible to play defense successfully without being able to generate consistent pressure. Doing so with only 4 players is super important. Sending 4 after the QB means being able to drop 7 into coverage. Watching Denver’s games from last season really clarifies how important consistent pressure is.
The front seven now boasts Hunter, Smith, Eric Kendricks, Harrison Phillips, Jordan Hicks, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Armon Watts. There’s a ton of talent there, folks. The most important thing will be health and the scheme change. If players stay healthy and Ed Donatell gets the most out of his guys, this team could bounce back on defense.
