Aaron Rodgers landed a massive deal. Then, Russell Wilson got shipped over to Denver. These moves certainly make one wonder about Kirk Cousins and his trade market. It also makes one think about when things will get going for the Vikings salary cap moves.

We’ve long known that there are a variety of ways to create room, many of which have been explored on Purple PTSD. When will it begin, though?

One wonders if Kwesi Adofo-Mensah & Friends already have several moves worked out. Perhaps the rationale is that they’re better off waiting to announce these news deal until the last moment. Why give the rest of the league some intel on what Minnesota is doing? It’s plausible that re-worked deals for Eric Kendricks, Adam Thielen, and/or Danielle Hunter have already been worked out (among others).

One also wonders if Kirk is the subject of a lot of talks. Is he holding things up?

Perhaps the Vikings are looking at a Cousins trade as a primary way of creating cap space. It wasn’t that long ago that Pete Carroll said he didn’t intend to trade Wilson. They then got a Godfather Offer, so they shipped Wilson out of town.

Unless the deal is re-worked, a trade involving Cousins would leave Minnesota with an extra $35 in cap space. Even after accounting for being over the cap, Minnesota would have around $20 million in cap space. Plus, the inevitable cuts, restructures, and extensions would further allow Minnesota to reload their roster.

In this scenario, one wonders about a QB like Mitch Trubisky. He was a bust in Chicago, but how much of that goes to the coaching staff? Trubisky may only be a career backup, a disappointing outcome given his draft slot. Perhaps he could be more, though. The Kevin O’Connell offense could certainly use his mobility.

Is there any chance the Vikings could recoup serious draft capital for Cousins, thereby allowing them to embrace a bridge QB like Trubisky as they also look for a QB in the draft? If so, the team will also have some added cap room.

Regardless of how things shake out under center, the Vikings will be making serious changes to their salary cap soon. On Monday, teams can start negotiating deals with the league’s free agents. Minnesota will want to have some money in their back pocket.
