Add on Another Guard for the Competition

Indianapolis Colts guard Danny Pinter (63) and guard Chris Reed (62) warm up before facing the Texans on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, at NRG Stadium in Houston. Indianapolis Colts Versus Houston Texans On Sunday Dec 5 2021 At Nrg Stadium In Houston Texas

A few minutes ago, the Vikings announced that they’ve signed offensive guard Chris Reed. He’s yet another option to compete along the iOL.

Currently, the team only has one strong lineman along the interior: Ezra Cleveland. His spot at LG seems secure, especially after Kevin O’Connell offered praise in his recent interview for Vikings.com. Center and right guard leave the team with more uncertainty.

The veteran Reed played for Mankato State during his college career. He filled in for Quenton Nelson when the league’s premier LG missed time last year. He later got some reps in at right guard, as well.

Like other recent moves, this signing is about increasing the internal competition. Reed, in all likelihood, isn’t going to turn into one of the NFL’s preeminent offensive linemen. Rather, he’ll be yet another option to consider as the team tries to put together a really strong front five.

He has previously played for Jacksonville, Carolina, Miami, and Indianapolis. At his best, he started 14 games, which occurred in 2020. Otherwise, he has mostly been a depth option who fills in when needed. It’s unlikely he’ll be making much more than the veteran minimum. He came into the league in 2015 and is nearing 30-years-old.

According to Over the Cap, the Vikings have just over $12 million in cap space.
