The Vikings Fill 90th Roster Spot, Add to TE Depth

Well, some Vikings fans will be underwhelmed by this news, but we now know who Minnesota is adding to complete their 90-man roster. The reports indicate that Shaun Beyer has been signed for an unguaranteed minimum deal.
Beyer’s profile on Over the Cap suggests he has only been in the NFL for one season. He was an UDFA who made a touch more than $290,000 last season, a minuscule amount for the NFL.
His college production isn’t particularly impressive. In seven games in 2020, Beyer had 11 catches for 158 yards and a single touchdown. The year before he had 7 catches for 117 yards. The yards-per-catch totals are fine, but it’s notable that the production isn’t higher. The basic stats suggest that his upside comes as someone who can be a strong blocker. He is 6’5 and 248 pounds.
Another note to remember. Just because the team has reached the full 90, don’t think that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah can’t add anyone. Obviously, they can’t go over 90 men, so any addition necessitates a subtraction. If the team’s leadership determines that there’s a player who would be a strong contributor, they could move on from one of the players on the fringe of the roster.
Until that happens, the Vikings will be working with the players who are currently in town. The competition for a depth TE job just got a little more difficult.
