Kirk Cousins, Wes Phillips Offer Praise for Kellen Mond

The Raiders game was mostly positive for Kellen Mond, prompting both Kirk Cousins and OC Wes Phillips to offer some praise for the sophomore QB.
By the end of the game, Mond had gone 9/14 for 119 yards and a pair of TDs. Both of the touchdowns went to veteran WR Albert Wilson. Both were crisp throws. Take a peak at the second TD pass:

Kirk Cousins spoke about Mond in his press conference, indicating that he thought the young QB “played well.” “I thought Kellen played well,” Cousins explained, “I thought he made some good throws. I thought our offense as a whole, I thought we ran the ball well.” Shortly thereafter, he said both Sean Mannion and Mond “had a good feel, a good command.”
Obviously, the hope and the plan is for Cousins to start all the games in 2022. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Kevin O’Connell, and the rest of the Vikings’ leadership group is expecting their starting QB to not only be on the field, but to be among the game’s best quarterbacks.
Unfortunately, injuries occur, and teams commonly need to pivot toward one of their backups. Cousins has been remarkably healthy throughout his career, and the hope is that this trend continues in 2022.
If Cousins does go down, though, it’s possible that Kellen Mond will be able to perform well for Minnesota.
In 2017, the Vikings came close to the Super Bowl largely because their QB2 was able to play great football. Very few would have predicted that Case Keenum would lead the Vikings to a 13-3 record and an incredibly dramatic playoff win over the Saints. The lesson for the current Vikings is that having a QB2 who can keep a strong roster competitive can be vitally important.
A lot still needs to happen for Kellen Mond to secure the QB2 job. He’s getting the chance to practice against the 49ers today and tomorrow. He’ll then get the chance to get more snaps this weekend. Showing the coaching staff that he gives this offense the best shot at possessing the ball and scoring touchdowns will be the key to him winning the backup job.
