One of the stranger bits of news to emerge this offseason has rested in the story about Adrian Peterson and Le’Veon Bell. At one time, both were among the best players in the NFL. Each was the RB1 for their offense. Currently, the two are planning on fighting each other. The boxing match takes place on July 30th.

PFT offers the report that AP is looking to “leave the door open to playing football in 2022.” Shortly thereafter, they provide a quote that describes Peterson’s reasoning about training, boxing, and football:

But since I’ve started, this is something that I’ll continue to do. I’ll continue to stay in the ring, continue to practice, get my skills right because it’s a different ball game when you step in that square. Fortunately for me, I have some great guys around me that are experienced. My gym in Houston, we have a ring in there. We have a lot of guys sparring all the time, and I’ve had the opportunity in the past to get in there with those guys a couple times and here recently, obviously, getting ready for the fight. I just been kind of grinding, so I might see this continue to do something going forward.

Adrian Peterson goes to say that he’s “waiting for that next opportunity to present itself.”

There can be little debate that Peterson is among the greatest running backs in NFL history. After being chosen 7th overall in the 2007 draft, Peterson ran for more than 1300 yards. Keep in mind that Minnesota also had Chester Taylor at the time, who was also a great runner. As a sophomore, Peterson was even better, going for 1760 rushing yards alongside 10 TDs. The high point, of course, came in 2012 when he ran for more than 2000 yards. He is first in franchise history in rushing yards, attempts, touchdowns, and yards per game. He was never a great receiver, but he’s actually 17th in team history for catches and 27th for receiving yards.

For his career, Peterson has 14918 rushing yards. We can be confident that the fact he’s so close to surpassing 15000 rushing yards is a major motivator. Whether there’s a team out there that will give give him another shot remains to be seen.
