Minnesota’s Internal Free Agents Will Likely Start Getting Signed

Recently, Chris Tomasson tweeted a list of Minnesota’s internal free agents who are still available. Several players are notable:

Of all the names listed, Sheldon Richardson is the likeliest to be brought back. He showed great versatility last season, working as both a DT and DE, as needed. Ed Donatell’s 3-4 scheme will lean on interior defensive linemen who can move up and down the line. One could envision a scenario where Richardson is a solid 5T in Donatell’s scheme, providing some pass rushing upside. Richardson finished the year as the 47th ranked DT on PFF, a reasonably impressive spot given that 109 players are considered.

Otherwise, the most notable names are Anthony Barr, Everson Griffen, and Dede Westbrook.

The first two names are veteran defenders who, in their primes, were critical parts of Zimmer’s high-end defenses. For a time, Griffen was one of the preeminent defensive ends in the NFL. His explosiveness and effort made him a challenge to block, especially when he nailed his spin move.

There was always a discrepancy between fan opinion of Barr and the coaching staff’s opinion. Of all of Minnesota’s internal free agents, Barr is likely the one who has inspired the most debate. What he can offer teams is some good versatility, great size, and intelligence. Zim was always quick to praise Barr for how smart he is. He’s a leader on the field (and off the field with his charitable work).

The lack of depth at tight end hasn’t inspired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to sign either Herndon or Stocker. Westbrook has his supporters, but the Vikings are loaded at receiver. Many will disagree, but Alexander wouldn’t be a bad addition. My understanding is that the team is looking to move on, but there’s something to be said for a veteran CB5 who can play both outside and along the inside.

Training camp is nearly here, so a lot of the veteran free agents will find work once teams start losing players to injury. Expect to see news about several of these players finding work before Week 1 arrives.
