Saints, Eagles Trade Shakes Up First Round

Perhaps this will foreshadow what is to come. In yet another move within this wild offseason, the Eagles and Saints have agreed to a trade. Take a peak at the details:

Admittedly, this appears convoluted upon first reading. The Eagles are giving up one of their first-round selections in this draft for some future draft capital. It’s yet another instance of the Saints being aggressive, indicating that they’re not interested in a 2022 rebuild.

Like many, I assumed that moving on from Sean Payton – especially given their struggles at QB following Drew Brees’ retirement – meant it was finally time to tear the team down. How wrong I was. Perhaps foolishly, the Saints are gearing up to compete for the NFC this season. The Eagles are being wise, stockpiling draft capital as they build their roster.

How does this relate to the Vikings? Well, both the Saints and Eagles are NFC teams. The Eagles, in some ways, are a team the Vikings want to replicate. They entered last season with low expectations, and they had a new head coach in charge. Philly made an unlikely run to the postseason. Now, merely getting in won’t be good enough for the Vikings. The purple decisions this offseason suggest they view themselves as a legit Super Bowl contender.

Plus, the Saints are one of the most hated teams for Vikings fans. The Packers will likely occupy the top spot until the end of time, but those Saints ought not be far behind. Many Minnesota fans haven’t moved on from the bounty system that helped New Orleans take down the Vikings in the ’09 Championship Game.

Moreover, the trade suggests that teams around the NFL are still looking to make moves. Recently, I put together a 2-round mock for the Vikings, one that involved a trade down. There is a lot of value in sacrificing a prime position if it means bringing in slightly-lower-but-still-high picks. The team still has several holes, and there is a fair amount of talent along the edge and at corner in this draft. Don’t be shocked if Minnesota responds by accumulating an extra pick or two.
