The Salary Cap Implications of The Vikings Cuts

The Vikings Turned Down a Trade

We’re nearing the point when some of the cuts may have an impact on the Vikings salary cap.

Over the Cap puts Minnesota at just over $10.4 million in cap space.

The team will again need to move on from some of their players in time for tomorrow’s deadline. The further things go, the more difficult the decisions can become. Players who are still part of the team must have shown the coaches something to stick around. For the most part, the starter positions are occupied, but the battles for depth spots are increasingly intense as the offseason proceeds.

Difficulty aside, one wonders if any of the coaching staff’s upcoming decisions will impact the finances.

If, for instance, the Vikings decide that Chris Reed ought to be among the cuts, there will be some salary cap implications. OTC suggests that cutting the veteran would leave behind $1 million in dead money while freeing $750,000. Now, I don’t foresee a cut happening, and nor do I think it’s a good idea to move on from a versatile, strong veteran. The example merely points out a possibility.

The appeal for more cap space rests in the potential to have more wiggle room. The increased financial flexibility could then, in turn, be used to improve the team through a signing or trade. At worst, it’s cap space that can be rolled over into next season’s budget, helping to alleviate future cap issues.

The Vikings, like every other NFL team, have until tomorrow to decide on players they’ll cut. Each team around the NFL needs to get their roster down to 80.

It’s unlikely that the decisions made over the next day impact the team’s budget in a dramatic manner, though the cap is something to watch as the rest of the offseason unfolds. The team will need to get down to 53 players by the end of the month.
