The Vikings’ Bye Week is upon us and it is time to get creative. Not to design new plays or construct a different defensive approach; we’ll leave that for head coach Mike Zimmer and his charges. It is time for us to recharge our purple batteries with some creative writing because it is Vikings Bye-ku Week at Vikings Territory and purplePTSD.

If you have been here in the past, you’ll recall that every Vikings bye week we resurrect an old tradition that started with former Vikings Journal writer Bo Mitchell, which was picked up by myself at Vikings Journal and continues now here. It’s a bit of fun that gets us forgetting about the losses, dreaming of more wins and fires us up for more game action—which will be back on Halloween night against the Dallas Cowboys.

It is pretty simple. The traditional form of haiku we follow here is three lines that contain five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line and five again in the third. See below for some examples. Additionally, each bye-ku must be Vikings themed and include some reference to the “natural world.” Now, that can be many things, and we are not strict about it, but we hope you will try to include that reference within your three-lined verse. The fun is in the bye-kuing. See how we can make up words?

Just post yours in the comments on Facebook or email to [email protected]. Or simply comment on Facebook on what you see here. Thanks and see you after the Halloween game.

Cardiac Cousins
Weekly wins, dug from the dirt
He really like that?!!!!

Three last second wins
Vikes fans don’t know what to think
Feel six feet under

Captain Clutch on board
His confidence grows like weeds
Reaping wins from chaff

KJ’s number three
But don’t give him open space
He will close you out

Zim on the hot seat
He likes living there just fine
Spits more tobacco

Adam’s amazing
Catches balls when covered tight
Has hands like frog tongues

CJ’s got the moves
Will Ham and egg with Dalvin
Leave you grasping air

Cook is chef’s surprise
Hits the hole; heads to daylight
Turf shards in his wake

Bend don’t break defense
Zim’s crew grinding ev’ry game
Close to razor’s edge.

Joseph toes the turf
Kicks field goals and misses, too
Zim dies some each time

Cowboys are scary
At The Vault on Hallows Eve
Time to bury them

VT carries on
Though our great friend Joe is gone
Heaven is Purple
