Tyreek Hill vs. Randy Moss Debate Erupts

Randy Moss and Tyreek Hill

For some reason or another, Pro Football Focus — a usually reliable NFL-themed entity — decided to dip its toes in the waters of Tyreek Hill as potentially the NFL’s best deep threat of all-time.

Hill is the most electric downfield threat of the last five seasons.

So, Anthony Treash began the bloodshed. Treash describes himself as a college football analyst. On Wednesday, he took on the NFL, evidently. His bio is here. His Twitter account here.

Outwardly, his comment reflects a narrow view of the NFL, or at the very least, a shortsighted one. While Hill is a speed merchant and a prolific scorer of touchdowns, proclaiming the Chiefs WRs as “the best” in NFL history is bizarre.

Then, the misinformation ensued.

This gentlemen, in a later-deleted tweet, announced that Hill has more 40+ yard touchdowns receptions than Randy Moss in his young career.

This is false.

The Minnesota Vikings Twitter account was quick to correct the record — a rarity for the otherwise tame social media account.

And then came the jokes.

After that, other organizations picked up the budding controversy and ran with it.

Vikings loyalists were fast to denounce Treash’s suggestion. Moss, a player that participated in 113 games with the Vikings, is widely considered a superior deep threat to Hill — and most everybody else.

Hill has played in 74 career games. Here is the comparison between Hill and Moss through their first 74 respective games. It’s also worth noting that Hill largely exists in a pass-first NFL whereas Moss was showcased in an era that still predominantly fancies the run.

Tyreek Hill — first 74 games:

  • 368 Receptions
  • 5,391 Receiving Yards
  • 47 Receiving Touchdowns
  • 14.65 Yards/Reception
  • 9.82 Yards/Target

Randy Moss — first 74 games:

  • 370 Receptions
  • 6,160 Receiving Yards
  • 57 Receiving Touchdowns
  • 16.65 Yards/Reception
  • 9.39 Yards/Target

There, Hill tops Moss in yards-per-target. But that’s about it.

On deep balls in gengeral (regardless of scoring), here is the skinny on that:

Finally, to totally debunk the aforementioned notion that Hill has “already broken” Moss’ 40+ Yard Touchdown numbers:
