Bashaud Breeland – the polarizing veteran corner – has found a new home. He is now in Arizona, meaning he’s heading to the playoffs.

Breeland’s time in purple was defined by poor play and conflict with the fanbase. His quickly-deleted lewd tweet did little to endear him to fans. I have very little knowledge of what it’s like to be a player who is receiving an endless amount of online criticism from weary, frustrated fans. What I do know is that Breeland could have handled the situation far, far better. The team is better off without him.

He was signed during the offseason to a one-year deal. The thinking (hope) was that he could compete for the CB2 job. Either he pushes the sophomore Cameron Dantzler to elevate his play or provides a stopgap solution in the short-term. Well, he did become the short-term starter, but he was horrendous the whole year. It really began in the opening week when he had his eyes in the backfield as Ja’Marr Chase scorched him for the long TD. It was the rookie’s first ever NFL game.

This sort of thing happened all year. Bashaud Breeland would regularly be lackadaisical in his coverage. He’d miss time due to minor injuries or illnesses only to re-emerge in the game shortly thereafter.

Jess Root of Cards Wire explains that Arizona is in a tough spot with their corner depth, or lack thereof:

The Arizona Cardinals have taken a hit at cornerback in recent weeks with injuries. Robert Alford was placed on injured reserve with a pectoral injury. Rookie Marco Wilson suffered a shoulder injury on Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts and is day-to-day for now.

At this stage in the season, it’s possible the Breeland is indeed the best option. For all the issues, he’s still a veteran who has won the Super Bowl. He is physical in run defense and has good length. Nevertheless, it’s not hard to envision how this will end up backfiring on the Cardinals.

It remains to be seen how much opportunity he’ll get against the Cowboys this week. If he is on the field, Dak Prescott would be wise to go directly at him. There would be a very good chance that it would lead to good things happening for the Cowboys, a team we should all be cheering for at this stage.
