Vikings Sign Michael Floyd!

It happened! A day later than some predicted, but it happened! And apparently it’s a one-year, make it or break it, sort of deal.

Former Cardinals stand-out and New England Patriot washout Michael Floyd was rumored to be on the Vikings radar for awhile now. The prevailing theory was that the Vikings were going to wait until after yesterday to sign Floyd as free agency signings affect compensatory picks in future drafts before May ninth. So, while this move wasn’t surprising it’s still extremely, extremely exciting. Keep in mind that I’m a child of the Moss-era and that the idea of the Vikings adding any deep threat to their offense gives me a spontaneous nose-bleed.

I’ve talked about how excited the prospect of the 6’3″ Floyd signing with the Vikings makes me and strap in, cause I’m about to do it again!

Floyd is 27. That’s typically considered the beginning of the “Physical Prime” of an athlete, or at least an NFL athlete. Sure, he’s got his fair share of baggage (Three DUI’s, Jail-Time) but if the Vikings did sign him I’m sure that they’re (and by they’re I mean head coach Mike Zimmer, mostly) confident that Floyd has put his alcoholism “behind” him (As much as an alcoholic can, as it’s a daily struggle, one that I understand from a first person point of view). Zimmer has a great track record of reforming troubled players on his team, so this could really end up working out for all parties involved (The team, Floyd and the fans). So, let’s talk about a 6’3″ receiver that’s accustomed to going down the field and coming down with the ball. He has 4.47 speed and while he very easily could become the Mike Wallace of this Vikings offense (A number one in name only), he’s accustomed to not being the premier target and I think that that means that he’d be comfortable with any position on this Vikings offense.

The prospect of an offense that now has Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, Michael Floyd, Dalvin Cook, Latavius Murray and Sam Bradford… Behind a(n) (On paper) patched up offensive line that regardless of how things pan out, will be better than the 2016 unit, makes my left arm tingle (That’s normal, right?). Last season the Vikings never had the time to set up a seven step drop or deep ball, so it will be exciting to see that wrinkle be added to an offense with the most accurate passer in NFL history. So, the Vikings have the offensive weapon they desperately needed in the run game (Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray), thanks to free agency and the draft and now the deep threat that they needed thanks to free agency and Michael Floyd. This essentially helps the Vikings offense become complete, adding the stretch the field ability that every NFL team needs in 2017 while also somehow simultaneously improving the prospects of everyone around him (Stefon Diggs has always performed better as a second/possession receiver).

So, join me in welcoming Floyd back to Minnesota! Stay sober, strong and… Skol? Sorry, I’m a sucker for alliteration.
