A recent report suggests that the Vikings may be one of the teams tasked with playing in London in 2022. Take a look at the word from Jeff Duncan:

Obviously, it isn’t a done deal. If things proceed according to plan, though, then Minnesota will take on one of their most hated rivals: the New Orleans Saints.

Having to travel overseas for a game is good for the NFL’s finances, but it does make life more challenging for the teams involved. It’s simply one more hurdle to clear in a season that’s already long and gruelling. The expansion to 17 games asks a lot of the players, so throwing in some extended travel only exacerbates the issue.

The Saints are in a somewhat similar position to the Vikings. Many expected New Orleans to finally embrace a rebuild now that both Drew Brees and Sean Payton are done (myself included). Instead of doing so, they’ve decided to rework the finances yet again to gear up for another run in 2022. I don’t think it’ll work for them, but many are likely thinking the same thing for Minnesota.

Both teams will vie for a playoff spot in an NFC that’s looking pretty wide open. The Rams and Bucs should be really good; Aaron Rodgers is good enough to get the Packers into the playoffs. After those three, though, there is a fair bit of uncertainty.

The Vikings vs Saints game will therefore be one of many tilts that involve good-but-not-great teams trying to get enough wins to catapult themselves into the final tournament. The London game may end up being an important one for the Vikings since both Minnesota and NO will likely be competing for the same Wild Card spots.
